Art is hosted in museums and galleries. Somewhat distant, it’s illuminated in the perfect light and under perfect conditions. People always have to come to see art. But why is art not coming to the people?
The International Patrons of the Pinakothek der Moderne, supported by Blackspace, developed a pop-up exhibition format that would completely change that. The project was started on the occasion of the 80th birthday of His Royal Highness Herzog Franz von Bayern and called it “Königsklasse”.
Blackspace designed the identity of the exhibition: Corporate Design, catalogues, invitations and posters. Ever since it opens its doors biannualy to Schloss Herrenchiemsee on the island of Herrenchiemsee, in a very particular part of the castle: The ‘Unfinished Chambers’, situated in the northern wing.
Every year, the island of Herrenchiemsee attracts 1.5 million visitors; one tenth of them have been been visiting the exhibition since. This is what’s driving us: that everybody benefits. We infected visitors with the virus of modern art; with the entrance fees the Patrons are able to acquire new art and give it back to the public.
